What Is Nova Physician Wellness?
Most of the providers I review are telehealth companies that launched sometime after 2020 to ride the GLP-1 wave. Nova Physician Wellness is a different animal. This clinic group has been doing medical weight loss since 2005, which means they were treating obesity as a medical condition 15 years before Ozempic became a household name.
The practice is led by double board-certified obesity medicine physicians and operates 8 locations across Northern Virginia and Maryland, with headquarters in Fairfax, VA. If you live in the DC metro area, there is probably a location within a reasonable drive.
Two things make Nova stand out from the crowd of GLP-1 providers I have reviewed.
First, the physician credentials. Board certification in obesity medicine is a real specialty with real exams, not a weekend course. Plenty of telehealth platforms staff nurse practitioners who spend seven minutes on your intake. A physician who chose obesity medicine as a career tends to think about the whole picture, including muscle preservation, metabolic labs, and what happens after you stop the medication.
Second, the insurance piece. Nova accepts insurance including Medicare for weight loss treatment, which is genuinely rare. Most GLP-1 providers are cash-pay only. For anyone over 65 or on a Medicare Advantage plan, the options for medically supervised weight loss are thin, and Nova is one of the few clinics in the region that will work with that coverage. The medications on offer are compounded semaglutide (the same active ingredient as Wegovy and Ozempic) and compounded tirzepatide (the same active ingredient as Zepbound and Mounjaro). The clinical evidence behind both is strong. Semaglutide produced 14.9% average body weight loss over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial (NEJM, 2021), and tirzepatide produced up to 20.9% over 72 weeks in the SURMOUNT-1 trial (NEJM, 2022). Those are trial results for the brand-name drugs, not the compounded versions, but the active molecules are the same.

The medication-included pricing matters. Plenty of programs advertise a low monthly fee and then bill the medication separately. Ro, for example, charges $149/month for membership and then $149 to $449+ on top for the drug. Nova’s $200/month with medication included lands near the middle of the market for compounded semaglutide and looks cheap next to most in-person clinics.
A few caveats on pricing. “From $200/mo” almost certainly means semaglutide at starter doses. Compounded tirzepatide typically costs more everywhere, and higher doses usually cost more as you titrate up. Confirm the full dose-by-dose price schedule at your consultation before you commit. The Insurance Path
This is where Nova gets interesting. If you have commercial insurance or Medicare, your visits may be covered as obesity medicine appointments, and the clinic can pursue coverage for brand-name medication like Wegovy or Zepbound through your pharmacy benefit. If your plan covers the drug, your total monthly cost could drop to a copay plus whatever visit cost sharing applies.
That path takes paperwork and prior authorizations, and approval is never guaranteed. But a clinic that actually files insurance claims is doing work that cash-only telehealth platforms simply skip. For an in-person clinic with physician oversight, $200/month is aggressive pricing. The cheapest telehealth options undercut it, but you are comparing a video call to a clinic visit with body composition testing.

Medicare patients in the DC metro. This is the clearest case. Almost no GLP-1 provider accepts Medicare for weight loss care. If you are 65+ and want physician-supervised treatment, Nova is one of very few doors open to you in VA, MD, or DC.
People with insurance who want it to actually get used. Telehealth platforms mostly ignore your insurance card. Nova bills insurance for visits and can pursue coverage for brand-name medication. Ro serves all 50 states from your couch and offers brand-name Wegovy and Zepbound directly. If you live in the DC metro and do not mind driving, Nova wins on substance. If convenience rules, Ro wins.
